UPDATE: Video tutorial is now available in this post

I love Sunflowers!  There’s no better time of year to think about Sunflowers than Fall….. And this Stunning Jumbo Sunflower Appliqué is to die for!

Well….. technically the designer didn’t call it a Sunflower….. she just named it Crochet Flower Pattern.  Doesn’t it make a FABULOUS Sunflower though?  I LOVE it and have used it a few times on hats as well as using Scrubby yarn to make it into a scrubby for dishes or cleaning.

Paper, Wool and Yarn‘s website used to have the pattern and schematic written out but unfortunately, her website is no longer available!!!!

I have had SO many inquiries about how to get a hold of the pattern. Thankfully, I DID make a copy of it long ago just in case I couldn’t find it again!  I will share it here, but I want to make it clear:

THIS IS NOT MY PATTERN!

As much as I would love to claim it, I can’t!  However, after a little research, I was able to find out the designer of this wonderful pattern is Uta Weingarten. Her blog was called Paper, Wool and Yarn but is no longer available.  Even though she has another blog, utasdiy.blogspot.com, I couldn’t find a pattern there.  Just a dead link to her old blog, Paper, Wool and Yarn.  Consequently…. I am sharing the pattern here, but I give her FULL credit for the design!!

Here is the pattern written exactly as she had it written in her original blog post (with one change I personally made on round 6 shown in italics, plus I also moved the stitches used to the top of the pattern) My materials used list is below the pattern

CROCHET FLOWER PATTERN

by Uta Weingarten from Paper Wool Yarn

(*I like to refer to it as a JUMBO CROCHET SUNFLOWER!!)

Stitches Used:

CH = chain
SL = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
(American terminology)

Begin with a magic ring (or a couple of CH joined with a SL if you like)

Round 1: 3 CH, 14 DC into Ring, join with SL in 3rd CH (15)

Round 2: 3 CH, 1 DC in same CH, 2 DC in each DC of the first round, join with SL in 3rd CH (30)

Round 3: 3 CH, 1 DC in same CH, 1 CH, 2 DC in same CH, *skip two DC, 2 DC in next DC, 1 CH, 2 DC in same DC * repeat 8 times, join with SL in 3rd CH (10 groups), break yarn

Round 4: Attach yarn around CH of one of the 10 groups, 3 CH, 2 DC around same CH, 2 CH, 3 DC around same CH, * 3 DC around CH of the next group, 2 CH, 3 DC around same CH * repeat 8 times, join with SL in 3rd CH (10 groups)

Round 5: 8 DC around CH of the first group, SC between the DC of the 4th round, * 8 DC around CH of the next group, 1 SC between DC of the 4th round * repeat 8 times, join with SL into first DC (10 groups)

Round 6: 1 CH, 1 SC in same DC, 1 SC in each of the following 3 DC, 2 CH, (*I did 3 CH here to make it more of a point) 1 SC in each of the following 4 DC, 3 CH, 1 SC between the two DC of the 3rd round, 3 CH, * 1 SC in each of the following 4 DC of the next group, 2 CH, 1 SC in each of the following 4 DC of the same group, 3 CH, 1 SC between the two DC of the 3rd round 3 CH * repeat 8 times, join with SL in first SC, break yarn

Sunflower Schematic

Paper, Wool and Yarn also had a schematic of the flower on the blog.  Since I could only download it as a PDF, you’ll have to click on the link below to open it.  For those of you that know how to read charts, it could be very helpful.

The written pattern seemed fairly easy to follow, at least until you reach Round 6, then it can be a little confusing.  Once I figured out what she was saying, it was easy to follow.

I took the liberty of taking some photos showing the steps on Round 6 that I hope will help to clarify and make it easier for you.

As you can see….. this is a BIG Sunflower!!

The yarn I used to make the Sunflower for the hats was Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice in Mustard and Chocolate  which is a worsted weight yarn

I’m sure if you used a smaller weight yarn you could get a much smaller flower. (My video tutorial has an example of the pattern made with a size 2 yarn)

With another Pattern to Follow….. I’m

  1. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation of round 6! I don’t think that I would have been able to complete it without your help. 🌻😊

    1. Oh I’m so glad you found it helpful! That’s part of the reason I created it since I thought it may help people! I had a hard time figuring it out the first time! Thanks so much for visiting my website. Enjoy!

      1. The videos are gone and I’m stuck on round 6.

        1. I’m sorry her videos have disappeared. She didn’t have those when I first made the pattern. That’s why I created the detailed photos on my post to help you through step 6. Perhaps they will help you? Good luck!

      2. The link to the flower is now longer available, do you have details of the pattern?

        1. Shoot…. it appears she has shut her blog down. I did, however, save the pattern for myself since I was worried that it may disappear someday. Give me a few days and I will go in and add it to my blog post. At some point I hope to make a video too. Thanks for letting me know!!

    1. I don’t have it in my possession any longer since I donated the hat, but from memory I would say about 6″ across. Of course that will depend on the hook and the yarn you use 🙂

  2. The flower patterns are very difficult to read for beginners. I crochet but do not understand how to read your patterns for the flowers. Sure would love to make some. Is there an easier one I could make to start
    and learn how to read your patterns.
    Thanks,

    1. Sorry for the delay on this answer. I love this pattern and would love for you to be able to make it. The original pattern is not mine, but I found a video that someone made using the pattern. I may make my own at some point, but in the meantime, check this video out. I hope it helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvPW3dToi9w&t=30s

  3. The flower patterns are very difficult to read for beginners. I crochet but do not understand how to read your patterns for the flowers. Sure would love to make some. Is there an easier one I could make to start and learn how to read your patterns. Thanks,

    1. If this was my own pattern I would LOVE to make a video of how to do the flower! That’s why I’ve only added photos of trying to show you how to do round 6. Do you read charts at all? She does have a chart for the pattern on her page. (paperwoolyarn.blogspot.com) I’ll reach out to her and see if she has more for you.

  4. The link don’t work and the pattern is gone. Would u still happen to have it t somewhere? Thank you.

    1. Thank you so much for reaching out and letting me know that! Yes…. I did save the pattern. Give me a couple of days and I will go in and edit my blog post to include the pattern and hopefully at some point a video. It’s too great a pattern to let it slip out of existence!! 🙂

      1. Is the pattern is available – I would love to have a copy of it. The video said they would be a link here but I can’t find it. Thank you

        1. I have written the pattern out in the blog post Stunning Jumbo Sunflower Applique. I don’t have a pdf of the pattern available since it’s not my pattern. I hope that helps! There is a link to the schematic in the post if you can read charts. I hope that helps!!
